INTRODUCTION

1. The First Coming of the Son of Man

a) The Lord Jesus came to be our Saviour

b) He preached and invited all to believe and enter into the Kingdom of God

c) He demonstrated the Power of God’s Kingdom

i) In preaching/ teaching

ii) In healing

iii) In casting out demons

2. The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) This was also taught carefully

b) Parables were employed

c) Straight teaching was also given

 

THE QUESTIONS OF THE DISCIPLES

“Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying,

“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the

sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3

1. Tell us, when will these things be?

a) A reference to the Destruction of the Temple

b) When would this take place?

c) Rome destroyed the Temple in AD 70

2. And what will be the sign of Your coming?

a) The Disciples believed in the Second Coming

b) Would there be a particular sign of His Coming

3. And of the end of the age?

a) The Disciples believed that there will be “the end of the age”

b) But they had no deep knowledge of this doctrine

 

THE ANSWER OF THE LORD JESUS
CONCERNING THE SECOND COMING

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;

the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn,

and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds,

from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:29-31

1. Forewarning of Tribulation Matthew 24:15-28

a) Great suffering

b) Persecution

င) The challenge is to endure to the end

2. Special signs in the heavens: Matthew 24:29

a) The sun will be darkened

b) And the moon will not give its light

c) The stars will fall from heaven

d) And the powers of the heavens will be shaken

e) These events reveal:

i) The great power of God

ii) His sovereignty

These would be cataclysmic events!

3. The Sign of the Son of Man Matthew 24:30

a) He will appear in the heavens

b) And then all the tribes of the earth will mourn

c) And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

d) His Second Coming will be different from His First Coming

4. The Ministry of the Angels Matthew 24:31

a) And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet

b) And they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

c) The Focus: The elect of God

i) From the four corners of the earth

ii) From one end of heaven to other

 

THE RETURN OF THE LORD JESUS DESCRIBED

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who [c]sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede

those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of

God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet

the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

1. A declaration of faith and Hope

2. The Lord Jesus will descend from heaven with a mighty shout of victory

3. We will be forever with the Lord

1. We may draw great comfort in this Truth

2. Let us deepen our faith in the Lord Jesus

3. Let us look forward to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
